Glaswegian Gerry Hughes is the world’s first deaf elite solo circumnavigator. More than that, he is a role model to the global deaf community.
Gerry is known internationally as a Deaf role model, not only for his sailing achievements but for his work in education, and sign language and disabled rights.
Gerry is especially keen to work with schools and organisations to ensure deaf and other disadvantaged young people get the same opportunities as everyone else. Special package available for school events. For example, during Deaf Awareness Week, Gerry met with primary school pupils in Pontefract. They watched documentary Silent Odyssey (the documentary about Gerry’s solo circumnavigation) then Gerry joined them via a remote link. The pupils asked Gerry some very challenging questions! The school also received two copies of Gerry’s book ‘Bridging our Differences’.
Gerry is available for public speaking and after dinner speeches.
