Queen's Baton Relay

Gerry waits for the Baton

On 22nd July, Gerry joined the team of Baton Bearers in the Queen's Baton Relay for the 2014 Commonwealth Games. Gerry and his family and friends joined the crowds in Queens Park in the south side of Glasgow to join the celebrations to welcome the Queens Baton to Glasgow. The atmosphere in the park was great. Everyone was friendly and cheerful and it was lovely to see so many children and young people enjoying themselves. When asked how he felt about being a baton bearer, Gerry explained:

"I feel very privileged and honoured that I was nominated to part of the Queen's Baton Relay. I was surprised about how emotional I felt when the baton was placed in my hand. When you see the baton on the TV and in the news you don't realize that it is really quite heavy. I felt a tingle right up my arm when the baton was handed to me. I looked at it and said to myself "this baton has travelled right round the world just like me". I could not stop thinking about how many hundreds of people who have touched the baton and helped it on its journey to Glasgow. I would like to say thank you to everyone who nominated me to be a baton bearer, everyone who came to support me today and everyone who put updates in the Quest III fan club. It was a great day and I feel very proud to be able to say I am from Glasgow."
