Executive Director of EUD

02 May 2013

I would like to take this opportunity to share the story of a very inspiring person with you all. Gerry Hughes from Scotland is currently sailing around the world single-handed.
We at the European Union of the Deaf (EUD) are following his progress around the world daily.
The most amazing thing is that he has demonstrated to us all around the world as well as in Europe that nothing is impossible with an 'I can!' mentality despite being deaf.
Do you realise that there are over three thousand people who have climbed the highest mountain in the world?
In comparison, there are only two hundred people who have already sailed single-handed around the world. Gerry's name will be added to this distinguished list of sailors who have achieved this amazing feat.
To us all, his name will always be associated with famous sailors such as Sir Francis Chichester and Sir Robin Knox-Johnston.
We, in the deaf community across Europe and around the world are very proud of his achievement and hope he will arrive safely at Troon to be reunited with his wife and family.
