Short Term Placement

 Research Assistant – European Union of the Deaf

August 2010 – 3 weeks

 
EUD is seeking a Research Assistant for the period 2 August 2010 to 20 August 2010 (time period negotiable from end July to beginning of September).


The successful candidate will work in a small team and research EU and Member State legal instruments and texts with reference to sign language/s. The results will be used in the soon to be published book ‘Sign Language Legislation in Europe’, by EUD.

 
Main duties:
  • Assisting in the research of current national level legislation of EU Member States;
  • Specifically, laws and regulations that mention or refer to sign languages;
  • Liaising with external experts and sign linguists;
  • Helping in preparing summaries and other background material through desk research.

Qualifications & personal qualities:

  • Recent university graduate or working towards a degree relevant to human rights, law, international politics, Deaf Studies or sign linguistic fields.
Languages:
  • Fluency in at least one sign language and English (written);
  • Working knowledge of additional European languages (preferably those from Eastern Europe) considered highly;
Desired attributes:
  • An understanding of how legislation works across Europe and at national levels;
  • Good organisational, team and social skills;
  • Flexibility, adaptability, reliability.
  • Ability to work both independently and in a small multinational team.
Contract details:

EUD is offering a 3 week unpaid placement in an NGO environment. A billeting option is currently being investigated and if organised will be offered to the successful candidate.

Process:

Selected candidates will be shortlisted and should be available to be interviewed on Skype early in July.
